The Baltic Sea Coast after Peak Season: Tips for Independent Travellers (September–November)

| von Hartmut Ihnenfeldt

When the peak summer season comes to an end on Schleswig-Holstein’s Baltic Sea coast, the character of the region changes noticeably. Beaches become quieter, the weather less predictable and some tourist services reduce their opening hours or close temporarily. For independent travellers, however, this can be one of the most interesting times to visit – especially when beaches, nature, towns and day trips are combined.

September can still bring mild weather and occasional days warm enough for swimming. By October and November, beach walks, cycling, hiking, historic towns and cultural attractions become more important, while swimming is increasingly the exception. An autumn trip to the Baltic coast is therefore best planned not simply as a beach holiday, but as an opportunity to explore the wider region.

Fewer Crowds – but Fewer Services Too

The most obvious difference from midsummer is the decline in visitor numbers. Promenades, beaches and car parks become considerably quieter. This is particularly welcome in busy resorts such as Timmendorfer Strand, Scharbeutz and Grömitz.

Our comparison of the best seaside resorts around Lübeck Bay and Hohwacht Bay shows just how different the individual destinations along this part of the coast can be.

Outside school holidays and weekends, accommodation is often easier to find and, depending on the destination and dates, can also be considerably cheaper than during the summer peak.

There is a trade-off, however. Some restaurants, cafés, beach businesses and leisure attractions reduce their opening hours. The smaller the resort, the more important it becomes to check in advance what is actually open.

Neustadt and Grömitz: Good Bases for an Autumn Trip

Neustadt in Holstein has an advantage over many pure holiday resorts once the bathing season ends. Its harbour, town centre, shops and restaurants remain part of normal everyday life throughout the year. At the same time, the beaches of Pelzerhaken and Rettin provide very different stretches of coastline just a short distance away.

Grömitz is another good choice outside the main season. It has extensive tourist infrastructure but becomes noticeably quieter once the summer crowds have gone. Autumn is a good time not only for the beach and promenade but also for walks and cycle rides towards Lensterstrand and along the coast.

Kellenhusen and Dahme are alternatives for travellers looking for somewhere quieter. Kellenhusen is particularly attractive because of its combination of coastal forest and beach. Dahme becomes more peaceful still outside the main season, although the range of tourist services also decreases more noticeably.

Hohwacht Bay: Nature Rather than Promenades

The Hohwacht Bay area is quieter again. Hohwacht, Sehlendorf and Behrensdorf come into their own once the conventional summer beach season is over.

Natural beaches, cliffs, woodland and the Sehlendorf lagoon provide good conditions for walking, birdwatching and cycling. Lütjenburg, Gut Panker and the Holstein Switzerland lake district are also within easy reach.

Our current guide to holidays around Hohwacht Bay provides further information on the villages, beaches and surrounding countryside.

Travellers looking for a wide choice of restaurants, shops and evening entertainment, however, will generally be better served by the larger Baltic resorts.

Lübeck Bay: More Options in Bad Weather

Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand retain a comparatively wide range of restaurants and tourist facilities in autumn. Travemünde is particularly versatile: its harbour, large ships, beach and proximity to Lübeck provide plenty of alternatives to a conventional day by the sea.

When the weather turns wet, Lübeck is one of the best day-trip destinations for visitors staying on the southern Baltic coast. Its historic centre and churches, the European Hansemuseum and the St. Anne’s Museum provide enough to fill an entire day. The historic Schiffergesellschaft is another of the old town’s notable addresses.

For independent travellers, it can therefore make sense to reverse the usual arrangement: stay in Lübeck and make day trips to Travemünde, Timmendorfer Strand or Scharbeutz whenever the weather is suitable.

Autumn Is Also the Time to Explore Inland

During summer, tourism is heavily concentrated along the narrow coastal strip. Autumn is a good time to look inland.

The Holstein Switzerland region around Eutin, Plön and Malente offers lakes, forests and numerous opportunities for walking and cycling. Combining the Baltic coast with the lake district also gives travellers considerably more options when the weather is changeable.

Eutin is easily reached from Neustadt or Grömitz, while Plön and Lütjenburg are obvious excursions from Hohwacht Bay. This makes it possible to decide each morning whether the day is better suited to the coast, the countryside or a town.

Autumn Is More than an Extension of Summer

The events calendar changes as well. Light festivals, autumn markets, concerts and cultural events gradually replace summer beach programmes. What is available varies considerably between destinations and from year to year, so it is worth checking local event calendars before travelling.

The quieter season can also be attractive for visitors travelling with dogs. At many beaches, summer restrictions are lifted or additional sections become accessible to dogs. Seasonal dates and rules concerning leads vary considerably, however, and should always be checked locally. Our overview of the best dog-friendly beaches on Germany’s Baltic coast provides a useful starting point.

Which Destination Suits Which Traveller?

  • Plenty of tourist infrastructure: Grömitz, Timmendorfer Strand and Scharbeutz
  • Combining a city break with the Baltic coast: Lübeck and Travemünde
  • A versatile base: Neustadt, with Pelzerhaken and Rettin nearby
  • Quieter seaside resorts: Kellenhusen and Dahme
  • Nature and fewer crowds: Hohwacht, Sehlendorf and Behrensdorf
  • Coast and countryside: Hohwacht Bay or Neustadt combined with Holstein Switzerland

The most useful advice for travelling after the peak season is therefore simple: choose a region, not just a beach. On sunny days, head for the sea. When it is windy, walk along the coast. A fine October day is ideal for exploring Holstein Switzerland, while Lübeck or Eutin are good alternatives when it rains.

Autumn on the Baltic coast is no guaranteed substitute for summer. But for independent travellers who are flexible and do not expect to spend every day on the beach, it can be the more varied and rewarding time to visit.
